History

The Florida State Lottery began in 1986 and after a constitutional amendment the voters had a two to one margin in favour. It was agreed that the proceeds would be used to enhance public education in the State of Florida.

The Governor of Florida Bob Martinez and the Florida Legislature decided that an education lottery that would be dedicated to maximize revenues and provide monies for the benefit of the people of Florida

Tickets first went on sale on the 18th January 1988 and Rebecca Paul was appointed as the first permanent Secretary for the newly created Florida State Lottery and throughout the State dispensers and Lottery terminals were soon installed at retailers.

During the 2005-2006 fiscal years more than $1 billion was transferred by the Florida Lottery to the Educational Enhancement Trust Fund and for the fourth time since its creation the agency has exceeded the billion-dollar mark. That’s more than $17 billion dollars since it started.
